The benefit of getting a photo on this and other food photography websites is that thousands of people all over the world have the opportunity to see your blog posts. This brings many new visitors directly to your website.

About three months ago I submitted my first food photo to foodgawker and was pleased when it was accepted within a few hours. Since then I have submitted 12 new photographs and the first 11 of those were rejected.

Once submitted from the foodgawker website, the photo is either accepted or declined. You patiently watch for that decision email with the subject line “foodgawker Submission Update” to arrive.

Then you see it and it says, “Thank you for your recent submission to foodgawker. Unfortunately, your post titled “Retro Bean with Turkey Bacon Soup” was not accepted. Primary reason: Composition – awkward angle.” And you are surprised at the sting you feel when you read the words.

Then, after many weeks of working on my food photography skills, trying to get the perfect angle, composition, exposure, etc., this morning I finally received an email that read, “Thank you for your recent submission to foodgawker. Your post titled “Happy Trekking Trail Mix Cookies” has been accepted and will appear on the site shortly.”

I now have two accepted photos in my Real Food Meals foodgawker Gallery! Yay! This activity is fun and challenging and inspires me to continue to improve the quality of my photographs.

It’s amazing how different it feels to get accepted and how being rejected stings more than you imagine it would.

I’ve read that the same areas of our brain are triggered when we experience rejection as when we experience actual physical pain. That’s why we can be surprised by the sting we feel, even with a small rejection that is an emotional slight rather than physical pain.

    1. Thank you! I’m still not sure what they are looking for. I have liked other photos I submitted better than this one, but they were declined and this one was accepted. I’ll just keep trying and maybe eventually I’ll understand better. I’m sure you’ll get another one soon. Is there some place I can see your photos?
