This lovely “Lemon Angel Pie” recipe comes with many, many years of history. It was passed down to my Aunt some years ago and I feel blessed that she has now passed it down to me. It’s a special occasion kind of recipe and would be great for the holidays.
My Aunt’s long-time friend, Betty, lived on a ranch in Idaho where she and the others in her farming community shared their favorite recipes with one another. I’m sure this must have been a very special recipe, because my Aunt remembers and talks about it so fondly.
When Betty passed on, my Aunt was gifted with her treasured box of recipes and that was a wonderful gift indeed. Just looking at the actual recipe from the recipe box, you can see the history in it. I can only imagine the number of times this piece of paper was removed from the box in anticipation of a delightful dessert to share with family and friends or for a special event.
The recipe reads: “4 egg whites – beat until foamy then add 1/4 teasp. of cream of tartar. Beat until stiff. Add 1 c. sugar gradually. Form into 8 shells. 275° for 20 min., 300° for 40 min. Don’t get too brown. 4 egg yolks beaten, 1/2 c. sugar gradually, 3T. lemon juice, 2T. lemon grated rind. Cook in double boiler. When cool add 1 c. cream whipped.”
These photographs are courtesy of my Aunt, from when she baked the little Angel Pies recently. I just love lemons and I love vintage recipes, since they usually call for real food ingredients. I didn’t really know Betty, but I knew of her and I look forward to making this recipe myself in the future and thinking of times gone by.
My Aunt is a wonderful baker and I’ve learned a lot from her. One of my fondest memories is when my husband, my son and I lived near her. She bakes a spectacular Christmas breakfast bread and for several years in a row, my uncle would deliver the freshly baked gift to our home on Christmas morning. Thank you for your love and support Auntie!
“And they will pray for you with deep affection because of the overflowing grace God has given to you. Thank God for this gift too wonderful for words!” 2 Corinthians 9:14-16, NLT
